Growing Your Business! Have You Tried To Increase Revenues And Failed?
So you want to double your income? That’s easy. Get a second job just like the one you have now. Oh, you want to double your income without working longer? In other words, increased cash flow and more time to enjoy it.
If you are a professional or a consultant, then you need to focus on the revenue formula. We don’t know who your ninth grade algebra teacher was and what your relationship was with him or her, but please stay with us. This is as easy as A times B plus C.
A stands for new clients. B is how much you charge per new client. And C is the amount of money you get from past clients. So Revenue = (A x B) + C
Actually, there are two components to new clients: # of qualified prospects you talk to multiplied by your conversion rate. For professionals and consultants, there are suspects, tire kickers and qualified prospects. Here are my definitions. A suspect is one of the 6.5 billion people on the earth you suspect might be interested in what you do, but all you have is a name and contact information. A tire-kicker is someone who has taken a step toward you to say they are interested in what you have to say. They may have attended a seminar, came to a speech, visited a trade show booth, signed up for your email newsletter, asked for a copy of your white paper, or some other information gathering activity.
Now, a qualified prospect, that is a tire-kicker or a referral who calls you and wants to meet with you to hear how you might solve their problem (and how much do you charge). To recap, here is the formula components.
A = (#QP x CR%) = new clients
B = $you get per new client
C = $you get from current and past clients
To illustrate, let’s say you talk to 10 qualified prospects per month. You convert 20% (1 out of 5) into new clients. You charge each new client $1,000. Added to that, you get $3,000 a month from existing and past clients. (Oh no, a word problem. Please, stick with us.) You make $5,000 per month.
(10 x .20) ($1000) + $3000
(2) ($1000) + $3000
$2000 + $3000 = $5,000
But what if you could talk to 15 qualified prospects per month instead of 10? What if you could get $1,150 per client instead of $1,000? What if you could convert 2 out of 5 (40%) instead of 1 out of 5? What if you could get $3,300 a month (10% increase) from past and existing clients instead of $3,000? All of these increases are actually modest and very doable. See what happens to revenue (yes, it more than doubles).
(15 x .4) ($1,150) + $3,300
(6) ($1,150) + $3,300
$6,900 + $3,300 = $10,200

Spread the Wealth - Consider the Raspberry Jam Rule
Virtually all of the professionals and consultants that we talk to who are struggling to get enough clients have the same problem in common. Here is just one of the hundreds of strategies we teach to attract more clients.
Gerry Weinberg wrote a handbook about two decades ago titled
The Secrets of Consulting. One of his first (and most important) observations about the pitfalls of consulting is his Raspberry Jam Rule: The wider you spread it, the thinner it gets. In our desire to include everything and everyone in our marketing, most consultants lose impact.
All of our research bears this out. Clients want specialists; however, picking a specialty area proves difficult for most professionals and consultants.
One of the best approaches to specialization is to go vertical. You want to find potential clients that gather together at meetings and read the same publications. Here are just 10 of the verticals to target, according to BtoB magazine.
- The early returns for this year are in for the U.S. construction industry, and the outlook for growth continues to be good. When business is good, what do they need? Good people, for one thing. One of our client’s specializes in recruiting for the construction industry.
- The global electronics industry will generate approximately $1.5 trillion in revenue this year. This is a huge industry integrated into other huge industries like automotive and aerospace.
- The financial services industry continues to grow at a healthy clip due to the overall expanding economy. The baby boomer generation is now reaching retirement age, yet people are living longer and the majority of boomers say they plan to work well into their 70s.
- Those pesky baby boomers are also creating more work for the human resources industry.
- The U.S. government spent $2.36 trillion on products and services last year. Surprise, that spending should increase to $2.5 trillion this year. Of course, successfully reaching this market requires targeting and patience.
- Health care continues to be a mammoth industry.
- Strategic investments helped the insurance industry counter catastrophic losses. Industrywide written premiums continue to rise.
- Forrester research predicts that U.S. spending on information technology will grow 7% this year and reach $840 billion.
- Nearly half of all professional service firms are law firms. According to the American Bar Association, there are more than 1 million licensed lawyers in the U.S.
- The meeting and hospitality industry continues to rebound. Industry insiders predict another year of modest growth.
